Duke IV is a hefeweissbier in the old German tradition, brewed with imported German wheat and pilsner malts, gently hopped, and fermented with Bavarian Weizen yeast. It pours a cloudy golden pint with a thick, oversized white head. Aromas of fruits and spice are complemented by a crisp wheat flavor. Finishes smooth and drinkable.

Pours a finger of white head into my Willi glass. Retention is subpar, and the head fades within a minute or so. Initial lacing looks ok. Body was mostly clear until I dumped the settled yeast in, now it’s a cloudy yellow. Looks ok so far.
“Wheat ale” had me thinking this was an American wheat until I smelled it. They make up for poor marketing with a solid nose. Notes of clove, banana, and brief sulfur. The aroma is quite nice.
Banana hits you right away on the flavor, some faint clove, no sulfur. Very tasty indeed.
Carbonation is elevated. Body has some good weight to it, over medium. A little sweetness, finishes somewhat dry. Bitterness is low. Overall a solid mouthfeel.
Drinkability is high, this is light, tasty, and goes down easy.
Appearance turned out poor, zero lacing, and literally no head, looks like juice.
Overall a solid Hef, straight forward, classic.

Look: Opaque yellow on the pour and quickly, a dense white head swells to a pillow and slowly settles, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Wheat bread, banana esters, cloves, yeast, and a lightly sweet note, reminiscent of Hawaiian bread
Taste: Follows nose well and drinks like I hoped and expected it would. Tons of bready wheat and cloves up front, with some nice banana notes floating in and out and closes with yeast and of course, more wheat bread
Mouthfeel: Full, silky smooth, medium-high carbonation, and soft throughout, especially on the finish
Overall: This is tasty stuff. These folks have been knocking it out of the park so much this year that it’s been fun to fall back in love with them as they are one of my favorite brewers in the state (OR). A delicious authentic and well-made Weissbier that hits all the right notes for me and something I could drink all afternoon
