This is the first Scottish 70 Schilling I have tried and I was impressed.

This beer pours a darker oak brown color with a slightly offwhite head that maintains for the duration of the drink (about 30 minutes). The clarity is almost brilliant, but stops just shy of being so.

The smell is appealingly malty and slightly sweet with hints of roastiness. There is little to no hop aroma present and yet it is somehow crisp and just a touch bready.

Tasting this beer for the first time, I was pleased by the balance of malts used and intrigued by the lack of noticeable hops. This beer is a rare find in the Northwest where almost everyone is a hophead. There is a clear malty flavor that is balanced not by hops alone, but by the mix of malts used to create it. There is a sweet bread flavor up front followed by a slight nuttiness and then a hint of roastiness. A very pleasureable combination if I do say so myself.

The mouthfeel is on the slightly viscous side and coats your mouth for a good 30 seconds to half a minute. There is a very slight slickness, but it is fleeting. Not overly sticky and not overly drying, but very well balanced for such a malty beer.

I rate this beer high on drinkability, as it isn't a hop bomb and also isn't a roast beastie, but rather a clean and flavorful beer focused on malt balance. The fact that it is 6.6% is a bit suprising to see, but I could tell it was more than a simple session beer after a few mugs of it. The great flavor and low hopping inspired me to try to brew a 70 schillling myself!

Since this brewpub is local only and doesn't distribute, bottle, or sell to other bars (at the moment) the only way to sample it is at the pub or get a growler to go. If you are in Corvallis, this is highly recommended.
