L’Ancienne, our most mature Turbulent Consequence release to-date, blends stock from barrels aged 36, 48, and up to 60 months old.Turbulent Consequence is brewed using classic lambic methods from the Senne River Valley in Belgium, including a multi-step turbid mash, inoculation with resident flora in our wild cellar’s coolship, and spontaneous fermentation and extended maturation in oak barrels. Mature barrels are then used in various blends throughout the year.

Cellared a year. Cloudy golden yellow with a white cap. Huge barrel character drives both the smell and taste in this one, oak is bright and full with strong stone fruit and citrus accenting, finished by an expressive funk. The feel though is light, and the sour nature gets more acidic without as much funk to cut and dry out. I would age this longer to let the flavors settle in more, but as for 1 year in the barrels are the clear stars which not traditional is not a bad thing.

Bottle from Uptown Market.
A clear copper with a dense, off-white head that falls off rapidly leaving no lacing, this looks solid. With beers aged this long, there's one of two routes - deeply earthy and funky with sherry notes, or acetic messes. This is quite strongly in the former while dipping its toes in the latter. Leaning more on a blend of sherry, walnut, walnut skin tannins, mild almond and honey, that this beer is aged is never in doubt. Mild notes of acetone are present as well. Funk is relatively reserved, with wet wood.
The palate opens tart, acidic and with so much pleasant oxidation. There's honey, sherry, walnut, a light candied almond note. A lactic sharpness with a mild acetone accent are present. Sherry on the finish with a nutty sweetness that lingers along with a pronounced nuttiness. Nice stuff.
