Inspired by First Alternative's 50 years of supporting local food and drink, this American-style golden barleywine was brewed with local honey, Mecca Grade malts from Central Oregon, and Oregon-grown hops. When enjoyed fresh, it blends rich notes of caramel and honey with citrusy and floral hops. Over time, these more delicate hop flavors will recede, allowing the malts to shine through as they're gently balanced by a lingering hop bitterness. Bottled in December 2019.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25
Look: Nearly clear amber-red with a frothy off-white head that erupts on the pour and eventually settles to a pillow, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Caramel, warm bread, toffee, piloncillo, wafts of floral hops, ethanol, toasted bread crust, and honey
Taste: Starts off with a caramel-slathered bread note and quickly joined by a slow-building honey sweetness that begins to mix in. Piloncillo, honey, toffee, and bready malt develop depth and rapport with each other as hints of floral hops peek in occasionally throughout but are kept at bay with all the malt and honey goodness. Alcohol is very well hidden and closes with honey and warm bread with some bread crust notes
Mouthfeel: Full, silky, medium to medium-high carbonation, and a smooth and soft finish with just a touch of alcohol heat
Overall: This is a damn delicious barleywine. As an OSU alum, I know the First Alternative Co-op stores well and was living in Corvallis when Block 15 first started up as a brewery so as a fan of both, I had to try this and it was a smart purchase. I don’t drink tons of barleywines and actually like the rawness of them fresh but this having two years on it is quite impressive and lets the malty goodness shine plus tempers the 11% ABV well. Outstanding stuff and highly recommended.
