Truncated notes below.

CAN: 50cl. Aluminum. Standard pull-tab. Red and white label design.

Served cold into a mason jar at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are low given the brewery. Reviewed live as a kellerbier.

4.50% ABV.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: ~2 inches. Adequately foamy and frothy. Fairly thick and full. Could be softer-looking and more robust. Head retention is good - ~4-5 minutes. Even consistency. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Dark translucent nontransparent copper of average vibrance. Doesn't have the usual protein haze or turbidness of a good kellerbier, but it's passable. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Looks pretty average for a kellerbier. Not unique or remarkable.

AROMA: Overly sweet, with Munich malts and pilsner malts, as well as a generic hop profile. Simple and shallow. Lacks the characteristic musty aroma of the kellerbier style. But it does have apt oxidated/unbunged vitaminy notes, so it's on the right track. And the yeast profile does seem German in character.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Pretty plain, with pleasant yeasty/vitaminy notes and minerals lending the beer easy cohesion. The malt profile is neutral, with light pilsner and Munich malts reigning supreme. I find no off-notes, overt hops, or booze. Simple and shallow as it is, it's pleasant and enjoyable. Flavour duration and intensity are average. Adequately nuanced, but not real intricate or complex per se. I like it.

TEXTURE: Overcarbonated, light to medium-bodied, smooth, wet, and somewhat refreshing. It doesn't accentuate specific notes from the taste, but it's well-executed for what it is, and complements the flavour profile generally well.

Fails to elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: Not a gestalt beer, but an enjoyable attempt at a kellerbier - especially considering it's Finnish. I was pessimistic approaching this because Nokian tends to put out subpar brews, but this might be the best work I've tried from them. Respectably average. I might get it again if I'm in the mood for a kellerbier while living in Finland; it's possible this is one of the only examples of the style brewed in this country. Worth trying at supermarket prices, anyway.

But it does lack the characteristic musty flavour of the best kellerbiers. Won't impress the discerning drinker.
