This prohibition-era porter is titled after The Little Theatre's original name during the time of silent films. Inspired by the theatre’s popular concession snack, Nanaimo bars, House of Silent Shadows is brewed with additions of cocoa nibs, toasted coconut, and almond. Its complex malt recipe offers characteristics of caramel and chocolate, while lactose in the boil adds a touch of sweetness to the finished brew.

Had this on tap at the brewpub on Buffalo Rd as part of a sampler

delightful smell of roasted coconut and almond, with hint of chococlate

taste follows, almond is a bitter almond taste (exuding a bit of cherry note), chocolate trumps coconut in palate though, with a somewhat thinner mouthfeel which ends up being just right

wish they still had this and Tiny Waffles (ale brewed with anise, lemon, and vanilla to echo the profile of pizzelles)

Can purchased and drank at The Little Cafe in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a moderately dark black color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This smells like roasted malt, vanilla, milk chocolate, and a slight dusting of chocolate.

The thinness of the body of this beer kind of dulls the flavors, but what's there is pretty good. I'd want a bit more coconut, but the sweet chocolate cacao goodness is very nice. The lactose is done with a subtle hand, adding some creaminess, but not getting ridiculous. There's a touch of sweet almond cream, too. It's a pretty good approximation of the delicious Nanaimo bars sold at the concession stand of The Little.

This is thin, but creamy, and very drinkable.

I'd want a bit more heft to the body here, but it's a pretty solid attempt. I'd imagine it might be better on draft.
