Presentation: It was poured from tap and served in a pint glass at the Rohrbach brewpub.

Appearance: The body has a dark hazy mahogany brown color with an inch thick off white head. The head hangs on well and makes some lacing on the glass.

Smell: In the nose I pick up the maple sweetness with some hints of caramel and bready wheat malt. Typical German yeast notes are also present but very mellow and set deep into the background.

Taste/Palate: On the tongue there is a mellow bready/wheat malt sweetness with some nice clove like yeast and light caramel maltiness. A modest and well balanced, slightly woody maple flavor adds another layer of sweetness. The hop flavor is muted but offers some mild bitterness to give some balance to the finish. The palate feels smooth and creamy with soft carbonation.

Notes: I was very impressed with the balance of this beer. It was still mostly malty and sweet, but it was never too sweet or cloying at all.

Review from notes in Fall 09

A- dark maple with garnet hues, quick white head retained as a thin film of bubbles. 4

Sm- lots of maple, light caramel, and very clean. Overall a bit muted though. 3

T- lots of pale malt with a hint of crystal, caramel flavors meld well with maple. Not much hops, but it works for this malty brew. Mildly sweet aftertaste. 4

M- medium bodied, well carbonated, dances on the tongue. 3.5

D- quite drinkable. Sessionable to say the least. 4

3.75/pint, On tap.

Notes: a great brew. This is delicious and a great representation of a maple flavored beer. Very clean, I wonder if it's a lager.

Rohrbach Maple Dunkelweizen is a crystal clear brown beer with a huge, smooth, waxy, light beige head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It has a spicy aroma with notes of clove, banana, raisin, wood resin and perhaps maple syrup. Something smells a little like squash. It's medium bodied and very smooth with a clean, dry finish. It's a bit flat. It's slightly sweet with no real bitterness. It's a mellow, clovey taste. There are fruity notes of bananas, pears and peaches. It gets sweeter and the maple comes in at the finish. It's pretty complex and tasty.
