Reviewed on a napkin during a visit on 1-21-2010. I only recently found the motivation to submit the review.

A: Black as night with no head or lacing.

S: Bouquet is somewhat reserved. Coffee ad vanilla are delightfully presented, but a tad shy.

T: Quite dry, with heaping doses of coffee and vanilla. I wouln't mind a bit more sweetness in this.

M: Medium body with a touch of CO2. Much too thin for the style.

D: A good shot at what is probably their first attempt. As with their DIPA, the recipe could use a bit of tweaking; in this case the body (higher mash temp may help) and the dryness (more caramel and chocolate malts). Despite this, it is quite enjoyable and worth a spot on your sample paddle.

Rohrbach Imperial Stout is a pitch black beer with a thin brown head that fades and leaves nice sip lines on the glass. It smells very roasty, with notes of coffee, chocolate and licorice. It's full bodied and velvety smooth with a clean finish. It has a salmiakki flavor and it's a bit fruity with notes of prune. It's a touch sweet and it has a bitter, dark chocolate finish. It's very drinkable and similar to Storm King or Old Heathen.
