On tap at Rohrbach Brewing Company in Rochester, NY.
Pours a clear copper color, with a 2 inch head, and lots of lacing down the glass.
Smells vaguely hoppy- no real distinctive anything, just sorta earthy/dank.
Tastes pretty bitter, with some pine and grapefruit, bit of a black pepper bite near the end. A small amount of caramel malt, but there's not a whole lot there.
Medium bodied, crisp mouthfeel, goes down easily enough. Medium carbonation.
This was OK, but not especially exciting in any way. This sort of IPA has been done many times, and most of the time, better.

Rohrbach West Coast IPA (AKA California-Style IPA) is a hazy, dark amber ale with a firm, cream colored head that leaves decent lacing. It has an aroma of grapefruit and Rohrbach yeast. It's medium bodied and pretty smooth with a dry, clean finish. The flavor is well balanced with citrusy bitterness and caramel malt. There isn't any sweetness and the bitterness is pretty mellow. There is a light citrus peel bitterness that lingers on the tongue. It was pretty easy to put a growler of this away.

On tap @ the Rohrbach Brewing Company (Rochester, NY) on 6/10/11. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear copper, with a finger of frothy bright-white head. This retains with some creaminess, leaving back some good looking lace. The aroma smells grassy and bitter, backed by a sticky and roasty smelling mix of malt. The flavors mostly seem to be jumbled up in the nose, with no real vibrancy or definitely to them, and this is made only worse by a strong presence of plastic off-notes. This is not pleasant.
The taste unfortunately mirrors this, with a strong green bitterness that lingers fairly harshly in the finish despite the presence of sweet caramel and toasted malt. Like the aroma, there is just no fresh pop to the flavors at all and this is once again ruined by a pronounced medicinal band-aid tasting off-flavor that pretty much completely spoils the profile. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a lively carbonation that sits on top of more of an underlying smooth slickness. The ABV is thankfully well hid, as this showing alcohol would have completely put this beer in the toilet.
With a name like California IPA, you would think that they were shooting for a West Coast style beer here. Unfortunately, not only was this not a good representation of that style but was also generally a not very well made IPA and serving this beer with such an pronounced off character going on with it was pretty inexcusable. Besides the look and body, this was pretty bad.
