From the Kalea Bier Advents Kalender. From the bottle, it pours a lightly hazy amber with a modest head. The scent is slightly bready, even to my stuffy nose. The taste is exceedingly pleasant and is definitely easy to drink. Yum!

More Altstadtfest wandering, another vendor serving different food and biers... This one a tall 0.4l glass for 3.20EU.
My tall glass was filled with a cloudy, yellowish-golden bier. Head was off-white and lasted well, with solid lacing present. Lots of grassiness in the aroma, almost sharp in character. Body was slightly under medium, more towards thin but still acceptable. Still, rather smooth on the tongue, all-in-all.
Taste has a touch of a bready character, then goes on to have a fruity, sourish quality. Quite like a green, young bier, fresh from the keg, which makes this one fit right in. In addition, a floral hop finish lingers a bit. A decent Keller, and refreshing on a hot day in Nürnberg.
Prosit!

Brown half litre bottle reviewed in my hotel room while visiting Nurnberg for the AltStadtFest of 2009.
Oh dear, it looked like the draught version, pale gold and a light cloud within, the same white foaming head even sat on top, but!
The aroma had sank to a very faint imitation of the yeast and hops that met my nose before.
The taste also had faded away, gone was the kellerbier feel and flavours, I found it boring and lost interest in it very swiftly.

On tap in their ceramic mug, in the guestroom at the brewery. Normal offwhite head, couldn't see the rest. Faint aroma of bread and wood. The first taste had a very strong hop bitterness, though the beer seemed less bitter as it warmed and I got used to it. There is a rich malty backbone, caramely and woody. Mouthfeel is medium to slightly watery. Very drinkable, but not overwhelmingly exciting.

According to Norbert (yes with a N) at the brewery store this beer was brewed in response to the locals desire for the Zwickl in a bottle. The recipe is the same except for the yeast, and this beer is lightly filtered. It is good for about 6 months as opposed to the 4 to 6 weeks of the Zwickl.
Poured a tall off-white head that faded slowly leaving some wisps of lace. Slightly hazy golden beer holds a few streams briskly rising bubbles. Understated grassy alcohol and a pinch of sweet malt in the nose. Moderately sweet pale malt flavor is a bit grainy. Grassy hops underneath the sweetness are a bit stronger then the Zwickl and add a nice tasty balance. The light grassy hop flavor outlasts a hint of grain in the finish. Body is average, and the carbonation is on the light side. I haven't been a big fan of the Zwickl (can't take the grainy flavor), but I kind of like this one. There is just a bit more hops, and a bit less hops, which works for me. It could also be that the growler of Zwickl I had last night has helped me acclimate to the style. A solid example. Give it a try.
