1987 Eylenbosch Framboise, 375mL bottle poured at Kulminator in March 2013.

I had this right after the 1987 Eylenbosch Kriek, and the liquid looked very similar. A reddish-brown color that probably was more brilliant looking when young. There was slightly more carbonation in the Framboise, with a thicker ring of large-cell bubbles around the edge of the glass.

It smells very nice, especially given the age. Strong raspberry character even after all this time. The taste is low on acidity, only slightly sour. Actually this was slightly better tasting than the kriek (not that that one was bad though). Very good balance of sweet fruit and slightly sour lambic, with some underlying complexity from the lambic that I was happy to find. I finished it much too quickly, if it wasn't for the selection available at Kulminator I would have gone for a second one right away.

1987 Vintage @ Kulminator. 37.5 cl. covered by cooked on dust but not so much as you would expect with part of the label gone. Bottle was split by 2. Pours a clear copper hued amber with no head. Dmell is a warning, rusty metallic & lots of old rotting & ancient chemical sweeteners, I quit smelling this after two tries because it is bad & unpleasant. Taste is bad, drinkable but that is just about it, even the drinkability of this is a borderline case, burned sugar, oodles of old gone bad sweeteners, completely expired, very nasty cough syrup, band aids, copper, rust, bitter metallic, tastes expired, vile. Flat & slightly sticky body. A lot of people are crazy about this beer & pay a lot of money for it & honestly I have no idea as to why. It is an old sweetened lambic. It is quite possible & that I got unlucky and got a bad bottle but honestly I cannot be bothered to drink another one to verify.

Pours a murky amber color with almost no head. Sweet, very sweet, in fact. Raspberry, sugar, cardboard oxidation, and mild tartness. The flavor is moderately sweet with a decent amount of acidity. Mild vinegar on the finish. Sweet raspberry and some oxidation. Flat and slick on the palate.

Vintage 1989. Sampled at private tasting at GABF.

The beer poured a cloudy pinkish red with a small off-white head.

The aroma was as fragrant as a fresh jar of strawberry jam. Some oxidation was present. There wasn't really much lambic funk in this one.

The flavor of the beer closely matched the aroma - sweet strawberry jam. Some earthy malt notes were present. The beer did have some general stale flavors present, but the oxidation I mentioned wasn't heavy - amazing for a beer that's 18 years old and traveled between Denver and Timbuktu.

The carbonation was medium/low. The mouthfeel was light.

I was pretty taken back by how fresh the fruit aspects of this beer were. The rest of the beer showed its age, but that's OK by me.

Sampled yesterday @ house of Peter van den Hurk( president of Bierkeurmeestersgilde netherlands). BBE march 1991. Great presentation without any head( due to no carbonisation) but nice amber brown and clear beer. Nose is that of fresh framboise smelling like the juice was just added, very fresh and good. Some mustyness there but very well fitting and overall for a geuze a clean nose. Subtile and low acidity and a very smooth taste but still fresh. Yes this still is a great beer that holds up very well to time. No bitterness and hard to detect any maltremains but the fresh fruit and complex mustyness and decent oaknotes make this one to a great example of a fruit lambic. More then worthwhile to try if you ever get a chance as it is out of production for quiet some time. Thanks Peter!
