Got this bottle at the Cambridge Wine Merchants, in Cambridge. Bottle-conditioned in a 500ml brown bottle, BB 04/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: bright tawny hue; the off-white fluffy comes with lots of tiny air cells but holds up quite well; carbonation is gentle and soft, showing a good result of bottle-conditioning.
S: an assertive flow of juicy orangey fruitiness, dried Chinese "Hua-Mei" (a kind of prune, heavily salted and sour), and honey-drink abounds; some coarsely crushed malts and a touch of caramelised sugar at the back, added with a touch of tealeaf-like aroma... The combination is quite traditional, yet juicy and delicious with a solid body of hops.
T: upfront comes a tremendous flow of bitter nutty malts, lightly caramel sweetness, and an early entry of almost tea-like bitterness... as the maltiness dissipates, the dryish mouthfeel lingers well, along with a peppery+earthy edge of dried hops as well as yeasts, and a lovely tart edge of raw nuts. Pretty clean in the finish, and the dryness and bitterness keep a slightly chewy mouthfeel down the sides of the tongue.
M&D: softly carbonated, this medium-bodied beer tastes rather soothing and balanced. This is perhaps the better bottle-conditioning attempt made by this micro-brewery. I'm sure the cask-conditioned version can be more tasty.
