(Notes of 05/11/08) Tasted by a half pint at the John Russell Fox, a JDW pub in Andover, during the chain's beer festival; served by a non-sparkler pour.
A: a clean, dark amber hue comes with beige froth and low carbonation - looking fresh.
S: outright cinnamon-y plus sour fruits and cane sugar... the spiciness is apparently overpowering at the expense of any potential balance.
T: a sour-sweet citric-fruity entry comes with cinnamon flavour and pale ale malts, leading towards a powdery herbal and slightly chewy-bitter finish, where a good mouthful of biscuity malts also manage to linger until the very end. Not terribly complex but somehow all's well in place and balanced!
M&D: overall this is a delicate, balanced (in terms of flavour, rather than aroma) and well-executed spiced ale, showing a mildly sour-bitter edge constantly on the side as a good balancer to the highlight of cinnamon herbs... if only the carbonation was slightly more lively and the condition was fresher. I don't mind trying this again when it's 100% on form!
