This is more-or-less the base beer that goes into Red Admiral. However, it is rarely brewed or available. I was lucky to get this on a visit to the brewery and it is bottle number 117 of only 180. Pours a brownish brassy copper with small head that surprisingly left little lace. Nose is caramel malts and brown bread with really earthy hops for a fairly classic English barleywine smell. Taste isn't as sweet as I expected, or perhaps the earthy character of the hops offsets the sweetness. Slightly herbal and certainly malty, but malty in flavor rather than sweetness. Nice mouthfeel that isn't too soft and certainly not cloying. Overall, very good and more English character than you normally get even from an English barleywine.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
