super weird beer that is actually blue, blue hawaiian sour ale they call this, made with coconut, pineapple, guava, vanilla beans, and soft serve ice cream, and if that sounds like a lot, it is a lot, and curiously, do any of those things really account for it being blue? not by my knowledge of them, maybe some spirulina or something in here, its sort of greenish blue tinted, not super appetizing in color i guess, dull and hazy too, but unique enough to stand out for sure and kind of cool i guess, short but creamy white head on it from the tap at the brewery, which is a great little spot. the coconut is forward in this, almost like coconut cream from the can in the asian food aisle, love that part of this, and with the pineapple this definitely takes on pina colada vibes in aroma and flavor, they could have stopped there and had a pleasant little sour here, the souring is lemony and near clean, but the vanilla comes in, natural and all, but over the top, and makes this real sweet and desserty, the blue part is weird and not really evident in the flavor, whatever colors it, and the guava adds mouthwatering tartness to me that seems slightly underripe and goes beyond the tang of the lacto souring in this. green grape and pear, generic tropical character, tart lemon, way too much vanilla even though i like what it does in here. this is clever and different, but its not real drinkable and i think it probably is trying to be one too many things. the soft serve ice cream gives it that lactose diabetic sweetness that it would be better without, why add ice cream to this? that part seems excessive and unnecessary, and the vanilla could come down. sweet on the teeth and with more grain feel than flavor, its all covered up. a neat project, but a small doses thing and definitely at the novelty level. i like the use of all this coconut and the real vanilla, but its all a bit much, and the blueish green hue is weird. fun and playful and experimental, which is their way of doing things here it seems. unlike anything ive ever had...
