St Georges Day Brew!

12th May 2012 saw me on a pub crawl of Shrewsbury: fourth pub was ‘The Wheatsheaf’ and a hand pulled pint of this malty, amber brew.

Good looking beer: nice amber to darker red colouring with a white foaming head which gave some impressive lacing.

The nose was earthy malts and nutty hops.

Tasted slightly different to your normal English Bitters: dry feel to the flavours, thirst quenching for sure, but something missing within the whole package.

Medium bodied and almost interesting.

Tried this beer at a well-preserved and splendid former-Victorian Bank now turned a Wetherspoon branch in the City area, London--forgot the name of the pub. The beer was tasted along with another beer on draught, Westerham British Bulldog. Just why these two happen to be named after some English/British old-day glory and persevering, fighting spirit is unknown...maybe coincided with the St. George's day which is coming up? Anyway, they both prove extremely nice Bitter and full of characters (albeit in very different ways), certainly nostalgic for being "good honest ales".

Appearance: tried it by half-pint and it pours slightly-dark amber colour, with minimal beerhead observed which left fine trace of lace along the way.
Smell: pleasantly mild-malty, mixed with delicate scent of apple or apple-like perfume...
Taste and aftertaste: bitter-sweet and nutty on palate, quite lively and, in my own term, "vertical"; with understated bitterness in the background. Good balance.
Drinkability: I rate it 4.5 because it was kept in such nice condition and tasted in a very spacious and relaxing place.
