Look: Deep brown to black on the pour with a minimal light tan head that quickly becomes a film on top, leaving decent lacing behind
Aroma: I could smell the rum on the pour and could still detect it from several feet away afterwards. Rum (obviously), wood tannins, cocoa, alcohol heat, and some bready malt
Taste: Starts out with a hit of dark chocolate and rum – a liquid version of chomping down a chocolate rum ball, and with dark malt and wood notes following close behind. Roast appears along with chocolate and they hold center stage before wood and rum return to close it out
Mouthfeel: Fairly full but honestly, thinner feeling than I’d expect from this big of a beer, low to medium carbonation, light slickness, and alcohol heat on the finish
Overall: this beer is solid to good but definitely not my cup of tea. I love what these folks do but admittedly, am not much of a rum fan nor really a liquor drinker at all, but I was curious what this would turn out to be, so bought one anyways. A decent stout though could use more body in my opinion, and the rum barrel component is easily recognized though a bit overpowering for me. It was worth the try for $6 for a 500mL bottle but unless rum is your thing, this one may hit you like it did me
