the favorite of mine and my wifes from out visit, this is really solid. good base stout, brilliant in its simplicity, lots of roasted dark barley, very little grain sweetness in the middle, not cooked all day, not packed with lactose or anything, nice coffee nuance to it, but it seems built for the barrel, which appears here as good whiskey freshly emptied, i like the way the bourbon comes through in the beer, sturdy but not dominant, with nuances of maple and vanilla bean, light smoke, and the corn its built from. there is nice bitterness in the dark grain to offset the sweetness of the booze, and i think the alcohol strength is awesome, its drinkable for the style because the body is light, even a touch thin if i am being critical, but i like it not being alcohol dominant or too big of a commitment to drink. espresso and dark chocolate as it warms, a little raisin thing too, and more carbonation than a lot of these have. a hint of licorice later, even a bit of spiciness from the whiskey at the end, quick finish for the style. well made, straight forward, and nicely aged. well done.
