Darmstädter Ratskeller Hausbrauerei GmbH “Spezial” dunkler export-typ
€3,80/,4L vom fass at the brewery on 18 September 2021
Look: Hazy deep golden/amber colored body beneath a full head of fluffy white foam. I’m not sure where the “dunkle” is in this, but they only offer four beers and this doesn’t match any of the others in front of me. Very good head retention and lacing; it leaves rings that look like barbed-wire with each sip.
Aroma: Unfortunately a bit sulphury.
Taste: Grainy with mildly grassy and herbal hop notes. A moderate bitterness balances it and leads to a dry, short lingering finish with grain and grassiness fading steadily.
Feel: Medium bodied with a crisp-then-smooth mouthfeel due to a seemingly natural, fine-bubbled carbonation.
Overall: Once again I fear that perhaps the sudden unexpected crowds following COVID have left them a little behind in beer production, leaving some sulphur to damage the aroma. Otherwise this remains an excellent beer.

On tap at the Ratskeller Hausbrauerei in Darmstadt, Hessen.
Pours a robust copper/amber hue (not the dark color expected) with a lingering full head.
The nose was less than ordinary, as it had nearly no discernible aromas. As it sat and warmed, I could begin to smell some caramel-toffee malts, but this is not a beer that will be known for its aroma.
The beer is refreshing to drink and goes down fairly quickly. But the brew lacked any real character: it had a generic lager flavor with a mild German malt profile and very little hop presence. A little more body than a pils, but not too much more character.
Overall a refreshing but ordinary beer; I was generally unimpressed.
