Darmstädter Ratskeller Hausbrauerei GmbH “Hefeweiße”
€4,40/,5L vom fass at the brewery on 18 September 2021
Look: Cloudy deep gold body beneath a full head of fluffy bright-white foam. Both the head retention and lacing are very good but they could be better. It leaves behind some spots and splashes of lace that fade as you go.
Smell: Yeasty with some sulphur; sweetish wheaty malt; banana and clove; a mild hint of lemon; some grassiness.
Taste: Doughy and grainy sweetish and wheaty malt with the aforementioned banana and clove, a hint of lemon, and delicate grassiness. Moderately bitter and very nicely balanced. It lingers with malt, clove, and spiciness.
Feel: Medium bodied and zesty.
Overall: Despite the unusual yeasty note and sulphur this is actually a very good beer. I wonder if they simply had to turn the beer quicker than they normally do because of all of the crowds following the release of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

On tap at the Ratskeller Hausbrauerei in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.
Pours a cloudy gold with a big, frothy, thick head. It's a perfect pour that is immediately inviting: my mouth started watering just looking at it.
The nose is full and I can smell it immediately after it was put in front of me on the table. Very bready with lemon citrus and a lot of banana, this beer almost smells like a Belgian wit.
A nice mouth full of flavor, but there is almost no finish. It is very smooth and lacks the spicy bite-of-the-tongue I've come to associate with many other heffes. The banana I smelled in the nose is very present in the mouth; there is a strong banana cream pie flavor to the entire beer.
Overall a very well done heffe that must have borrowed some inspiration from the Belgians: I've never tasted a German beer that had so many Belgian characteristics. More banana than I've ever tasted in a heffe, this flavor dominates the profile a tad too much. Still, a wonderful beer that I would recommend trying if you are visiting the town of Darmstadt.
**Update 12/30/11 **
I have again visited this brewery, and again enjoyed the Hefe. And I had to change my appearance rating from a 4 to a 5. When looking at it this second time, I really cannot think of any way that this style could produce a more beautiful pour. It is thick and cloudy, really like melted butter poured into a glass. And the thick, foamy head which graces the top is really outstanding. A top notch Hefe.
