€2,99 @ Naïv, Frankfurt, DE

Notes via stream of consciousness: Brewed by Julian Menner for Daam-Euler GBR (Naïv, Frankfurt, DE). Starting gravity: 13.8˚ Plato, 5.5% ABV, 24 IBUs. Brewed with Pilsner malt, dark caramel malt, oats, wheat, and Munich malt. Hops include Cascade, Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic. It’s poured a hazy golden body beneath an average head of white foam. It seems to be holding well, so we’ll see how the lacing goes. The aroma is fruity with berries (obviously the Mosaic), and citrusy. It’s not the brightest of aromas but this is just a pale ale so that’s totally fine. The flavor immediately causes me to think, where did they get an IBU rating of 24? This is much higher than that. Maybe it was 24 in the kettle before adding whirlpool hops, I don’t know, but this seems to be at least 35, and maybe even more than 45 to me. The malt is fairly complex and comes across as rustic, but I guess with wheat and oats in it that’s a given. It comes across like an old, dry piece of bread. The hops aren’t too strong in the flavor either, and I could be wrong but I feel like I’m getting some pine out of it. As for the fruitiness of the Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic they’re muted and come across as a kind of generic mix. In the mouth it’s medium bodied and crisp as expected, but still very fine-bubbled in the German tradition. Looking back, the head held up well but the lacing was only average, or maybe a little bit better than average.
