Crowler from Uptown Market. 2020 release, 8%
Black with a brown head with good retention and lacing, this looks great. The nose has quite a bit of fresh, raw oak, woody, tannic and bitter to go with a dark malt rich stout base. Tons of roast, with lots of bitterness, bordering on acrid, along with pine hop bitterness. Missing is the fruity lager notes i expect from an export stout. The palate opens ashy and bitter, a blend of bitter roasted malt, burnt sugar, moderate hop bitterness. A moderate oak character, toasted yet raw, heavily tannic, is present, calling to mind oak spirals or staves rather than barrels. Relatively thin on the palate, with moderate, creamy carbonation. Long, bitter, oaky finish. Disappointing.
