When Kyle (@horusagedales) announced the campaign to drive donations to help Alex and his family, I was immediately on board. My contribution to this cause is "For The Kidd's", a 11.5% honey wheat wine that was fermented in a single malt barrel. This beer was brewed with Whims Brewing over 2 years ago and a keg has been sitting in my fridge ever since, awaiting the right moment. I added some Mexican vanilla and conditioned it on ambruana wood chips to add some sweetness and baking spice to a very barrel forward beer.

Poured from a stubby little 6oz can. Deep, opaque sienna brown coloration. There is some weak beige froth that bubbles up on the hard pour, but it is quick to settle back into the body of the beer. After a moment, there is not a single bubble of carbonation visible in the glass.

The nose on this is unbelievable; gingerbread cookies, cassia bark, & vanilla extract swirl together in a fantastic bouquet of bakery aromatics. The ginger notes weaken after a few minutes and switches up the profile to become more reminiscent of cinnamon rolls.

The palate punches initially with a bit of sweetness, but brings an added layer of complexity with underlying esters and slightly drying bitterness. While still sweet, it brings less of the fresh baked goods and more of a caramel raisin bread pudding profile.

The mouthfeel is coating but not overly heavy. As briefly mentioned above, it dries slightly and has a touch of lingering estery bitterness. Carbonation is low but present, and on the finish is an abundance of comfortable warmth.

Overall I was really impressed by this. Coming from a collaboration between a homebrewing operation and a nanobrewery I wasn't sure what to expect tackling such an intimidating style, but they nailed it. The addition of amburana and vanilla was absolutely key. There's still some work that could be done on the base wheatwine recipe, but the selected adjunct filled the gaps perfectly in this scenario, and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for Shore Side Brewing when he gets a full-production facility up-and-running.
