A winter stablemate to the Emerson’s Weissbier, a delicious dark wheat beer brewed with a potpourri of different malts to achieve the tasty complexion; Canterbury lager malt, German wheat malt, crystal, caramunich, then finally caramelised and roasted wheat to complete the malty depth of flavours.

This beer pours a dark cherry colour with a nice one finger head that holds well and leaves nice lacing,i hate having to agree with everyone else who has reviewed this beer but there right on the money the smell is sweet vanilla, caramelised bananna and some roasty chocolate wheat, the mouthfeel is above average with a nice caramel, bananna taste to it a very nice example of the style and drinkability is high but coming from this brewery that doesnt suprise me.

Pours brown with a massive, growing off-white head.
Nose shows soft chocolate, doughy wheat, bananas, subtle spicy hops and cloves.
More chocolate and wheat as flavours alongside a little booze. These initial flavours quickly disappear however.
Carbonation is much too high.

This pours a very dark brown with a great beige head with some nice retention.

Oh my god. Can the Emerson's mob do anything wrong? Everything I have ever tasted from them has been superb.

The label sums it up wondefully - caramelised chocolate bananas. The caramel flavours tend to swap around with a touch of coriander in my mouth. That may sound horrible but it works a treat.

Ok I'll admit that as the glass has gone down I have started having mixed emotions. Maybe the flavours are a bit over the top.

Let's just say it is good and leave it at that.

500ml bottle poured into a snifter (best available option)

A: Pours very dark brown, almost black, with huge foamy tan head.

S: Wow, smells like chocolate banana bread. Banana and bread like aroma from the yeast and chocolate from the malt. sour yeast when i empty the bottle.

T: Taste is much more mild than smell but nice nonetheless. Spicy coriander upfront with lots of bitterness towards the back. Dry grain is evident in the taste as well. again sourness from the yeast when i empty the bottle

M: Medium body with medium carbonation wheat provides a dry finish.

D: this is a dark beer but it is still a wheat beer so it goes down pretty easy.

A: Cloudy rust color with a small amount of head that reduces to near nothing leaving a lot of lace. High levels of carbonation.
S: Wicked big yeast aroma with hints of banana, chocolate and maybe a little cinnamon.
T: Chocolate comes through early and often. Think dark bitter chocolate rather than sweet milk chocolate. Wheat comes in midway through, particularly as it warms. Slight banana and yeast finish.
M: Pretty light bodied. I know carbonation is typical of these German wheat beers but wow. Given the darker nature of the dunkel I wouldn't have expected this to be quit so bubbly.
D: I strongly suggest letting this one breath and warm before trying. Becomes a totally different beer. Considering this is the first batch I gotta give some respect to Emerson's for continuing to expand the NZ beer scene.
