I bought a six pack of this not knowing it was a Marzen. Their six packs are just plain cardboard with a sticker on them and this didn't say anything other than the name. The appearance is a dark gold to copper in color with moderate carbonation and a one finger white head. It's pretty translucent. The smell is of sweet maple mixed with the typical Marzen spice. I'm not a fan. The taste too is typical Marzen mixed with maple syrup. The two just don't mix. It drinks crisp but it's not a good sign when that's the highlight. This beer is average, average, average.

This beer poured a small tan head with small bubbles that quickly diminished. There was some lively carbonation observed and there was no lacing. The body was cloudy and the hue was dark amber. The nose was very malty and yeasty. The flavor was bitter and some clove. The mouthfeel was light-medium and tingly.

Clear amber, with very thin head. Malty sweet aroma. Flavor begins with a healthy dose of sweet carmel malt, some bread like flavors, and finishes with just enough hops bitterness to balance. Medium body, and medium to high carbonation... very smooth. Maybe not the best beer in its style, but a very solid amber.

Clear red-amber body with a thick off-white head. Fairly bubbly, but not an overly fizzy brew. Rich aroma of sweet caramel malt - I didn't notice any hops in the nose. Very sweet, malty taste, with just enough bitter hops in the finish to keep the malt sweetness from being too intense. Smooth, almost creamy, mouthfeel. Overall, a very nice brew.

Draft sample at Back Road Fest.

Poured clear dark amber with an average white fizzy head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and tart citrus aroma. Medium body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

My expectations where met.

A- Pours a medium amber to brown hue. Moderate clarity with only a bit of unpasteurized haze. Small, one finger head forms and retains fairly well. Lacing is pretty good.

S- Lots of medium-flavored roasty malts. Big dose of maple sweetness in there to go along with a ton of caramel malt sweetness too. Less bread-like than most marzens because of all of the sweetness.

T- Really faint when compared to the smell of this beer. Starts with some dull malt flavors. Kind of tastes like caramel malt that has no sweetness, but also doesn't have much roast quality, just a slightly dull, metallic taste. Moves into some sweeter, maple-like flavors, but only for a brief moment. Ends with a rather forgettable flavor profile of muddled malts and maple flavors.

M- Moderate carbonation, with more of a chewy feel. Chewy feel makes this beer feel a little thicker than it might actually be. This is the highlight for the beer because it feels like an authentic German unpasteurized lager.

Overall, interesting attempt to integrate maple flavors into a marzen style beer, but it doesn't really work. The flavor profile just isn't there, with or without the maple thrown in.

12-oz brown bottle

Lovely coppery gold with small cream-tan head.

Sweet malty-caramel nose. Cannot detect any hop scent.

This is all about the malt--sweet, slightly toasty, malt. Definitely sweet though not cloying. The alcohol (7.2% according to the website) is well-hidden but you get some warming alcohol, especially as you breath out.

A creamy, smooth medium-bodied mouth feel with a good amount of smallish bubbles.

A nice sweet/malty lager is good for two or three at a session, which is dangerous with so much alcohol in them. May be too sweet for drinking in very hot weather, but plenty nice in cool weather.
