Pours seemingly opaque dark-brown body with ruby hue when held tot the light, capped by mid-sized light-tan head that gradually recedes to a stable veil.
Nose is prominent dark fruits (among which grapes stand out), malt with pronounced caramel and chocolate qualities and evident, perhaps overly so, whiskey-like alcohol.
Malty flavor with bready qualities is surprisingly well balanced by hop bitterness and there are chocolate and even coffeish qualities with mild roasty notes, and light dark fruit tartness. Alcohol is lesser than in the aroma dept, providing warmth and helping balance the malts which are attenuated enough that the beer never gets cloying and finish is nearly dry. The carbonation is rather soft (moderate initially but quickly vanishing) and body is medium to medium-full. There is a sort of off-flavor that could be described as stale-like. (500 ml, Lot 4, BB 09-2012, into tulip.)
In short, a rather sub-average Doppelbock with chocolate-coffeish qualities and dark fruits, esp. grapes.
