12 oz. on tap at a restaurant in Venice, Los Angeles, on Friday, July 12, 2019

L: pale gold, clear, perfect 1/2-inch head of sticky foam; it laces a little

S: hoppy ... grapefruit and green, the green being sharp fresh-cut grass and cilantro; the grapefruit dominates

T: like the nose and at times very bitter, but there's plenty of malt to offer some balance, sweeten it a little and tame the hop bite; grapefruit again dominates along with some more earthy grapefruit peel

F: medium crisp, nothing elaborate in any direction, simple but effective

O: exactly what I hoped for from a West Coast-brewed pale ale; loads of fresh hops mostly in grapefruit form; I don't know for sure if this beer was Crystal Mess — the restaurant listed it as simply "Fall Brewing pale ale" — but it seems most likely; whatever it was, it's one fantastic pale ale and good enough that I'll look for more Fall Brewing beers in the future

Clear golden yellow with plenty of foam in the chalice. It's quite hoppy with a clear mineral and citrus aroma. Clean and crisp. Very light on the malt though there are some sweet bready notes. There's an interesting dark taste with the brambly astringency of blackberry seeds.

More earthy than fruity, some leaf mold smell. Finishes with lime peel and the bitter pith of grapefruit. A little more of that than a light Pale Ale needs, I think. From the 64 oz growler filled at the brewery tasting room.
