looks like these guys might number their beers, this one is 101, and its a classic bitter but then dry hopped with admiral and goldings, pretty neat, and real agreeable at a little hole in the wall pub after walking around edinburgh all day. something about a proper cask bitter will always be romantic to me, and this is a mighty fine one, nice malty rich middle, fresh slightly spicy hops on the back end, lots of balance and majorly sessionable at this low abv, fantastic. amber colored with a pillowy creamy three quarters of an inch of white head from the cask, mellow looking and super inviting. the nose and taste are hoppy for the style, bitter and grassy with some greenness in the aroma and some light citrus there as well, a hint of green olive and its brine set up a richer malt base, lightly caramelized with a toffee note and some old school english ale yeast, real well proportioned, and the flavor follows the nose, a nice dance between english grain and the hops through the whole drink, ramping up hop intensity but never super bitter, especially by american standards, some neat herbal character to the hops that i think take the style to a little bit of a new place while still also staying classic, the ferment is tidy and this dries out a lot at the end, middle notes of granola and honey, later its pithy citrus and maybe a light copper metallic thing, but its not an off flavor at all, its a minerality that adds a lot to this. medium body, full to me for how low alcohol this is, smooth and velvety on the palate, the yeast flavor is more apparent as this continues to warm up, and overall this is a complex and cohesive and drinkable beer, hoppy as these go, but well within reason, and this was one of the best cask beers i had on our entire trip to scotland, really very well crafted. my first ever from these guys, cant wait for my next!
