brought back from a shred day in Golden, BC and shared with my BA bro andrenaline
A - deep dark ruby red, creamy tan head left nice lacing
S - banana bread, vanilla, and roasty malt
T - alcohol bite with a molasses malt, some fruity sweetness, not at all like the nose
M - almost no carbonation, syrupy with an alcohol bitter
D - somewhat disappointed in terms of style, not as expected and not overly pleasant in terms of flavour, but may appeal to some

Based on the date of the last review, this could have been a well aged bottle...

A - Pours a dark mahogany, finger of head with decent retention and some sporadic sticky lacing.

S - Quite fruity, with a bit of a banana bread scent coming off the top, and buttery caramel on the finish.

T - A very sweet offering, with the ABV heat and sweetness in your face. Reminiscent of DFH's Sao Paolo with respect to alcohol flavours, but is only 1/2 the strength! Dark fruity flavours with a bit of molasses and some bitter licorice.

M - Medium body carbonation, but a syropy and mouthfeel. Bitterness lingers on the palette.

D - Complex flavours but the ABV is way too present and needs to be more well hidden in order to improve the drinkability on this one. I'm glad I was able to split this one because there's no way I could've taken it down alone.

A: Dark, dark brown with a slight ruby tinge. Off-white/tan head, not a lot of retention, but leaves a little lace.

S: Full malt, dark fruity aroma. Some fresh hop in the nose, with a little solvent as well.

T: Dark malt (slightly bitter, bready, dark caramel, prune), slightly fruity from the yeast (with some higher alcohols), with some warming alcohol in the finish. As it warms to room temperature, it becomes a little more medicinal. It certainly tastes better when it's cold (my beer fridge is at 42F).

Some nice flavours there, but they're not very well integrated. Perhaps it could've used a little more time in the secondary. I think they've got a good recipe here... they just need to give it a little more time to mature.

M: Moderate body and carbonation.

D: It's alright, but I don't think it's as smooth as it could be.

Excellent dark colour.
Flavour is strong without being as overpowering as a stout. Of the four current winter seasonals I've tried this year, this one is second only to the Hermanator in overall quality.

Everything I am looking for in a strong winter ale, without being to strong.

look for it while it's still around

Now this is more like it. No infection and more hops than last year. You know this is going to be good when the nose is hoppy and fresh. The beer has a nice hop bite to it with good malt on the finish. Not a truly huge winter warmer but rather a easy drinking dark ale with lots of flavour. Nice to see this beer hit its mark.

A nice brown colour wuth a good head. But it smells very sour, and almost off. Taste is significantly better, but still has a slight sourness to it. Hopiness with traces of molasses, but still the sourness predominates. Easy drinking, but not that impressive. Maybe I got a bad bottle. I would try this again next year only to see if had improved.
