white wine barrel aged sour, finished with apricot and krush hops, a unique combination. i love the idea, and the execution isnt bad, i think the sourness runs away with this a little bit, its quite bacterial, but the fruit and hops together are way cool the white wine barrels were the right choice for this, and it feels ambitious in an intriguing way, even if it could be dialed in a little bit if they revisit it again in the future, just my second beer from this outfit. murky orange pour without much head, looks about the color of apricot jelly, that dense matte specific orange tone, fairly thick. the nose is sharp, white wine yes, but also some subtly acetic presence, white vinegar, beyond lactic, very sharp, but the fruit is obvious and bold, not at all fermented out to me, so it balances that to some extent, and there is complimentary citrus and fresh hoppy presence from the krush, a way cool addition that i think brings this to a better place than it would be without it, it adds lightness and a point of interest beyond the fruit where the fermentation kind of lets me down, so a good recipe choice there, and it works great with the apricot, subtle honey in the malt, vanilla from the oak, and florals from the wine side, could definitely be less acidic. i taste most of what i smell, i think the hops fall off just a bit, and the sharpness rushes its flow. lemon and orange with the obvious apricot, which seems cooked and kind of concentrated down rather than light and summery and fresh to me, but it still seems like real fruit too, preserves or something. light almost cinnamon spice in play from the barrel, a little something cheesy and cheerio dusty and then later kind of bitter from the ferment, like some young brett trying to sort itself out maybe, i dont love the ferment on this even beyond the overly acidic thing, a shame because the fruit and the hops and the white wine element all work so well together. light coconut from the hops too perhaps, love what they bring. heavy to drink, more body than it needs, sweet and sour at the same time, a little tough on the teeth and in the belly at this intensity, and woefully under carbonated in a style i want to really pop. some details to iron out, but the elements work nicely together, and i was glad to get to try this. this is more fun and unique than it is technically good, but i liked it anyway. cheers to these guys for three years!
