Tonewood Brewing Co. "Chief"
Sampled from what seems like a 16 fl. oz. can but which is not labeled as such. No production coded or freshness dating.
$12 / 4-pack at the brewery
Look: Deeply hazy golden body with an orange sheen beneath a short head of bright white that holds well and leaves thin splashes and spots of lacing behind.
Smell: Citrusy, light piney, and softly resinous with distinct notes of lemon and orange, some grapefruit, and a touch of pineapple.
Taste: As the aroma suggests with a little more depth (some papaya, some raspy herbal notes) over a straight-forward golden malt base. A solid bitterness lead to a dry finish with residual lingering tropical fruits.
Feel: Light-medium in body and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural, slightly soft carbonation.
Overall: It's impressive in its hoppiness, but slightly out of balance as there doesn't seem to be quite enough malt underneath. It becomes a little 'top heavy' in my opinion. It's almost like a "session IPA" except that it actually packs a respectable 5.4% abv. It's almost there, just a little bit of malt is needed, but it's not quite there. The other option, which most drinkers would probably hate against, would be to tone down the hop flavors and bitterness a bit.
