Found in the Böhle Delikatessen in downtown Vienna. I got all excited at the thought of U.S. craft brew in Vienna, but it was too good to be true. Brewed under license, the 33cl brown bottle features a long thin neck and a red, white and blue label featuring the stars and stripes draped over CONUS (that's the Continental U.S.) behind the Statue of Liberty. Ingredients conform to the purity law. The freshness information is not marked.
Pours a clear deep cola brown under a 1/2 finger vaguely purplish head that fades very quickly. No lace. The sweet light caramel nose is a bit too reminiscent of a Munich Dunkel. The mouth is very prickly and somehow both light and sticky. The taste is mainly sweet caramel, with just a vague hint of the roasted malt the style requires. There is also very little hops, generating just a tickle at the back of the throat. The aftertaste is mildly dry and a bit sweet. Definitely does not live up to its name.
