Three separate malts including one French pale malt shore up this clean, citrusy American-style Pale Ale. Apart from the malts, our namesake beer includes a secret combination of bitter hops including Cascade and locally-grown, ancient-style black rice to create something uniquely Japanese in character but easily drunk by all.

2/16/08 Had some more of this brew. More hops than I noticed the first time. Also much more of a dry mouthfeel. Other than that, still a good beer and definitely worth a try if you can get your hands on it.

Poured a clear golden-orange color with a slightly off-white 1 finger head that dissipated rather quickly. Very little carbonation rising.

Aroma is sweet, citrus and some piney hops.

Taste was of citrus [grapefruite tartness], toasted rice, light malts with some hops at the end. Adjuncts are noticeable but not dominating.

Mouthfeel is light and dry. Slightly sticky.

Overall, a very drinkable brew. Better than expected. I will certainly have again. Nice can too!

Do you like grapefruit? If so, this beer will not disapoint. The beverage Shinto beer most reminded me of was Fresca. Which is not to say that this is a bad brew, it's just that the grapefruit taste was so overwhelming I couldn't find much else hitting my palate.

The beer poured smoothly from the can with a small head that faded quickly when I poured it into a pint glass. The color was a nice pale amber, beautiful when placed next to the yellow of a Super Dry, Kirin, or any other Japanese macro. Unfortunately Shinto is almost as carbonated as those beers, which brings down the mouthfeel and drinkability.

I love this beer for two main reasons. First, it's great in the morning and afternoon, when you're not quite ready for a heavy beer but want something with more taste than the standard Japanese fare. And second, it's only 295 yen per can in Ise, which is a steal for micro-brewed beers in Japan. Moreover, I couldn't taste a huge difference between the cheap Shinto can and the 900 yen bottle of the same brewery's pale ale. This is a good beer to pick up if you're in the area.

just picked this up on a recent trip to Ise, where i saw this beer being sold everywhere i looked. apparently it's very popular in the area, but i've never seen it anywhere near nagoya.

looks a lot like an english pale ale, dark gold with a brief head. nothing special for appearance. smell is surprisingly hoppy, perhaps even moreso than yona yona. pretty big juicy, citrusy aroma, maybe even some pine. actually when i think about it, it reminds me of a cleaning solution. it's not a very pleasant or appetizing smell but it's not bad.

same for taste. a nice pale ale, and another good japanese craft beer to add to my list. a welcome change from the world of boring macro lagers, but nothing to write home about.

A - Beautiful transparent copper amber beer with a white head.
S - Piney aroma with nice malty, spicy brown sugar yeast notes.
T - Very quick finish, which most Japanese love, light bready malt, not a lot of bitterness.
M - Too carbonated, but then again, thats the way most Japanese like their beer.
D - Pleasant. This would be great the next time I need to take something to a party.
