Really drinks like it's an IPA that's half New England, half West Coast.
When I poured it and gave it a whiff, I thought "oh no, this smells like it's gonna be one of those hyper-sweet murky IPAs, a la Junyard Brewing." Thankfully, this was not the case. This is an extraordinarily well-balanced IIIPA. On first pour, I was also struck by what a nice carbonation it had. A lively and bright carbonation, yet not overly-clean like a sour's carbonation. (Yes, I have seen some IPAs with that style of carbonation, almost like it's a sour.)
This thing is really making my night. It's so nice to drink the best of a West Coast and NE-style in the same IPA. I'm not sure how accurate that really is, it's probably much more NE-style than anything... it lacks the true bitterness of a West Coast, but the hue and the feel are a lot like it's at least partly west coast. Maybe that's just what makes it murky rather than hazy. It is definitely more of a MURK than a HAZE.
Phenomenally well-balanced. Just the right hint of sweet. The carbonation is perfect. The 10%+ ABV isn't gratuitous, it's like this fine ale just happens to be that strong. A very clean-drinking ale, it doesn't have that heaviness or saccharinity that a lot of IPAs have in this range of ABV. It's funny that the can art is so over the top and cartoonish, this ale is extremely sophisticated and well-balanced.
