Cervecería Icono

I wandered across the border into Mexicali a couple weeks ago and visited Cervecería Ícono, and I was pretty impressed. The beer is perhaps not the most ground-breaking in the world, but it’s among the better craft beer I’ve had in Mexico, and overall it was a pretty cool place. There were 16 of their beers on tap on my visit (including a couple collabs); styles included porter, watermelon sour, Märzen, Oktoberfest, a collab festbier, milkshake IPA, session IPA, West Coast IPA, red ale, light lager, NEIPA, Kölsch, blonde, DIPA, pale ale, and hazy pale. Overall a pretty good breadth of styles. The NEIPA was my favorite of the beers I tried.

The space is kind of an atrium with the taproom sharing space with some eateries and even a full bar; I think they’re all part of the same business, though. There are some fermenters at the edge of the taproom; not sure that they’re used, but they definitely give a brewery vibe to the place. My Spanish is pretty bad but the staff had enough English so that I could order a couple beers — and that’s all you really need!
