my first from these guys, and a style i love but we rarely see, i wish more breweries would take these on. deep amber colored brew with an average white head on it, some shine to it, fine carbonation, maybe a full shade richer and darker looking than many of these. the nose is odd on the ferment, like it smells like bready lager yeast but also somewhat tangy and astringent like it got run warm enough to stress it out, an odd clash with the sweeter almost baked grain complexion, odd but intriguing. the flavor is about the same, the ferment makes this what it is and im not sure i love it, light peppery character with some toffee and maple from the malt, a little european character there, simple and effective on the grain side, but the ferment is odd and it zizzles a little on the tongue. some residual sugar, a crusty rustic bread note, minerals, light citrus but very little from any hops, kind of old school i guess but also kind of amateur a little bit, like this could be executed better than it is. autumnal to me, so not ideal this time of year, and overall leaves a little to be desired, but i appreciate the stab at a tricky and uncommon style, and its lighter to drink than it looks. perhaps i am being too harsh, but tidy up the ferment a bit and this could go places...
