Pours matte black like coal into a fisheye pint glass. There is a slight, dark walnut head that starts loose and rapidly dissipates to a thin, fine ring of foam.
Strong roasted malt and slightly burnt black coffee greet the nose. Light baker's chocolate and cocoa powder lead to faint plums and campfire smoke.
Roasted malt is more subdued in the flavor, yet it is still prominent. Black coffee, however, is stronger than in the aroma. While it is more bitter than sweet, both are fairly modest. The finish is long, with roasted oats and some lactose.
This has a medium to light body with a creamy smooth texture. The alcohol is as expected, while the carbonation is soft and prickly.
I found this to pair very well with a pungent Roquefort cheese. The cheese softens the bitter edges, while the creaminess lightens the body.
