Hard beer to rate, whole lotta going on here. A Complex beer for sure. tested from a 12oz Bottle bought at the taproom.
Look is more like stout.
Smell is anise, dark bread, roast
Taste is Anise, A little black Licorice, clove, Then some smooth roasted malt, then Pine hops. Then Fades back to roast. Plenty of flavor here, not wimpy at only 5% Abv. Has flavor layers for sure that bounce back and forth.

I like it but not something that you in drink large qualities. More of a cold weather or holiday beer it would seem. 3.96+/5. Definitely worth trying out.

Brewery notes: Raven Queen is a Black Wheat India Pale Ale brewed with roasted wheat, dark malts and Star Anise for a hint of Black Licorice.
A Raven Queen is a Valkyrie. The Old English form of the word Valkyrie; also means "Raven". Valkyries conversed with ravens and possessed the ability to shape change. These mighty woman deities decided the outcomes of wars and chose only the most valiant warriors to accompany them to Valhalla.

L - Very dark brown. Hard to tell on clarity. Tall, light brown head with good persistence.

S - Strong scent of anise. Maybe a little grain or bread.

T - Very distinctive. Some dark coffee, quite a bit of anise, probably some clove too. Dark and spicy.

F - Medium.

O - I'm not sure all the flavors work for me, but I've never met the beer it's like.

Pours pitch black with a 3 finger brown frothy head. Retention is very good.
The nose has licorice on it. That is the main aroma.
Taste licorice up front and it lingers. There's hops on the backside mixed on with the licorice.
The body is pretty full and the licorice and hops linger on the palate.
Delicious and tasty beer. Quite good. A few are going home with me.

I got this as a gift from my dad, and apparently this is bottled in July. Not the freshest. I let the beer warm for ten or so minutes.

Look: the beer pours a dark brown/black with minimal to no head. What head is spotted comes in a tan color. There is no sign of transparency in the beer.

Smell: I get anise... And that's about it

Taste: the taste initially starts with anise, and in the middle slightly goes to a bit of a hop profile, maybe citrusy, and then back to licorice.

Feel: the beer seems to be a medium mouthfeel, about right for the style, and a dry finish.

Overall: I think that without anise, this beer could be a lot better. To be fair, it seems I didn't have this as fresh as I should have.
