Found in a Moscow grocery store, the green half liter bottle has the trademark spiralled neck and a gold and dark green label that reads "Weizen Welde", with "Hell" printed along the side. Purity law applies, of course. The back label promises a smokiness. Hmm. Best before 1/24/07, I opened it on 5/2/06.
Pours a very cloudy yellow under a two finger white head with nice body and a bit of stickiness, lingering long and leaving a healthy number of lace spots and a few strings. The nose is strong of wheat and particularly yeast, without the spice or lemon one comes to expect from the style, but lots and lots of yeast. The mouth is light and very prickly, as it should be. We've got strong and refreshing yeast flavor dominating here. There's very little wheat, no hops, no citrus and no spice. Amazingly one-sided brew, at least at first. As it warms, a touch of sour and a hint of hps bitterness emerge, although still very subdued. I can't say that I noticed the promised smokiness. It's missing quite a few elements standard for the style, but somehow, it works as a quaffer.
