Mission Valley, a glittering hellscape where new money breeds like rabbits, hungry for status symbols and overpriced validation. It’s a place where the suits from La Jolla come to slum it in their off hours, away from the prying eyes of old money and influencers snapping selfies by the sea. Here, in the sprawling maze of shopping centers and office parks, stands Puesto Cerveceria, a shrine to the absurdity of San Diego’s food culture.

But let’s not get lost in the ornamental bullshit—this place has something real going for it. Doug Hasker, the mad genius of lagers, a man who’s spent decades brewing beer that actually tastes like beer, not the swill being peddled by every craft brewery chasing the latest hop fad. Hasker was the heart and soul of Gordon Biersch, back when they were more than just an airport footnote. When the chain collapsed, Puesto swooped in, gave the place a facelift, and slapped a $15 price tag on tacos that taste like they should be selling for a buck on any street corner south of the border.

But they kept Hasker. And thank god for that, because his lagers are the only thing anchoring this place to reality. Clean, crisp, unapologetically old-school—these are beers brewed with the kind of dedication that’s been all but lost in the age of fruity IPAs and overhyped stouts. This is where Hasker shines, crafting liquid gold in a sea of mediocrity, and for that alone, Puesto is worth the visit.

The food? It’s good. Hell, it’s even great in that "I have too much money and not enough sense" kind of way. But let’s not kid ourselves—no taco is worth $15. Not in a city where you can stumble into any taqueria and get something better for a fraction of the price. Yet, people line up, throwing their money at the problem, convinced they’re getting something more because they paid more. It’s the American way, after all.

So, if you find yourself in Mission Valley, overwhelmed by the shiny facades and the scent of desperation, head to Puesto Cerveceria. Grab a Hasker-brewed lager, let the madness of overpriced tacos wash over you, and raise a glass to the last vestige of real beer in this strange, new-money wasteland.
