For this dark lager we wanted to reach a little deeper and richer than a schwarzbier but not go as heavy as a Baltic porter. This beer lives somewhere in between. It ends up somewhere like a Death and Taxes inspired Munich Dunkel. I mean, we’re all living in the shadow of Death and Taxes.
Richly complex with Munich malts, Vienna, Pilsner, Chocolate malt, and just enough Carafa III. A 15-minute decoction lends an underlying complexity and the lengthy lagering time melds the whole thing together.

16 oz can
Beautiful dark cola brown color with light hints of ruby. Massive cocoa head with excellent retention. Leaves some sticky lacing.
Aroma has hazelnut and bready malt. A hint of chocolate.
Taste has lots of chocolate and freshly baked bread. The faintest idea of spicy hops. Nicely balanced flavor.
Medium bodied with pretty good carbonation. Dry and smooth.
Very good and well-balanced dark lager. Drinkable and full of malt flavor.

From Lukr at Bock in South Park, San Diego. Great pour, super smooth. Heavily roasted malt shines with a decent hop presence in the finish. Leans Euro Dark Lager more than a Czech as the body is a bit thin. Rich chocolate with some hints of earth, this is really good. Likely average from the can but stellar on Lukr.

Pours a clear dark brown with an amber edge and plenty of foam in the Tuborg Pilsner glass. Moderately sweet and malty with roasted grain. Pleasing sudsy mouthfeel. I like this better than the typical Schwarzbier, and it does have something of the Helles along with the dark. Flavors of caramel with a touch of cocoa, and finishes with some raisins and herbal hops. From the 16 oz can purchased at Special Brews. Dated 3/6/25.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canning date is hard to read but I think it's 3/6/25.
Appearance: rich, dark brown hue without too much haze and a nice cap of frothy tan foam atop.
Smell: nicely malty with some good chocolate notes. There's kind of a vegetal quality, though, I think from the hops.
Taste: rather a bit on the sweet side, with some light chocolate and caramel character. Maybe a bit sweeter than I'd like, but not bad.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: this beer has some imperfections, but it's not bad by any means. I'm actually finding it rather refreshing on this hot summer day.
