It came to me a hazy ruby chestnut with a bit less than a finger of light tan, pithy head that dwindled promptly. Small measures of lacing clung stubbornly.
The aroma was distinctly malty, rife with caramel and toffee notes, along with raisins and a tangy yeast component. There was also a vague, stylistic bitterness.
Upon sipping, the malt came to the fore, with a mild toasty sweetness and caramel/raisin duet. A small glimpse of alcohol meandered through, assisting the aromatic hops bitterness in drying out any lingering sweetness. A slighty bready yeastiness cropped up near the end. The finish was gradual and lingering, with a bitter glow as a legacy. It's a good sized real ale pleasure.
Medium bodied, it had a genuine presence on the palate, with a little weight and chewiness, and a lingering buzz on the tongue.
I had no idea what to expect of this, and so it was a pleasing surprise. It's just what I would have expected had I known it was a genuine, British strong real ale. Drinking it gave me the warmth of sharing a pint in a ppub with my mates. Thought, that might have been the ABV, which impressed as bigger than it really was. Simply, it was good, and fun to drink. Can't ask for more than that.
