my first beer from these guys, maybe their first beer overall? an upstart operation out of spokane without a brick and mortar spot, not sure where its being made exactly but its definitely getting around town a little bit, but sure their plans either with the spotty media, but this liquid was tasty! a mexican chocolate stout with nice proportions and not too much residual sugar, well made for sure, not amateur really at all, and it has me excited for whatever they have planned. mirror shine on this from the tap and close to black with a short burlap colored head on it, looks well refined for being new and small timey. the nose has light smoke, dry cocoa, fudge brownie, subtle earthy chili, and a cozy spice thing too, but not overdone, as the roast from the dark barley is prominent and up front, and pulls chocolate more than anything else, light tobacco and molasses richness, very pleasant, minimal on the ferment, complex but also somewhat understated overall compared to some of its peers. sweet up front in the flavor with more bitter roasty character, coffee notes, and chili and cinnamon warmth later on, but maybe im looking for that stuff, its chocolate and roast more than anything else, light smoke, some richness but then cleaner at the end, hearty but not real boozy or anything, and with nice nuance and texture, smooth and soft feeling, inviting really, not overdone with spices and neat for the upcoming seasonal change. excited to see where these guys go from here, this is a real promising start...
