Smells of yeasty wet wheat bread, sourdough, green apples, fresh air.

Medium amber hued deep golden color with a luxurious and lacing white head, sediment visible throughout.

Immediately spicy is the big surprise. Lemon zest, black pepper, dried fruit, dates and figs are cast in order of appearance. Brief cameos by leaf tobacco and a baseball glove. This is crawling with flavor intrigue and nuance.

Fairly medium bodied all things considered. It has an interesting way of biting the tongue and the CO2 froths in the cheeks.

This is yet another terrific reminder of the virtues of patience and care in cellaring. I had this fresh in 06 and it was alright back then, with some hot alcohol and somewhat cloying wheat sweet as main players. Now it is what I had hoped for all along, it is really, really good stuff 6 years later. I'd wager this could have cellared longer, but I'm not sure just what could have improved.

Well, My friend founds a bottle of this a week or two ago on the shelf so he picked it up. It may be a bit past its prime or not agedwell, or theres the chance that I don't know barleywine very well (which is very true)

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass

Appearance: It was very golden in color, every pour had lots of multicolored floaties in it, probably kicked up from bad handling, It ended up with about 1/2" of head and was very viscous in appearance.

Smell: Very sweet and fruity, Apricot, some nuts, smelled a lot like malt extract

Taste, very similar to smell, with wheat malt flavors, again apricots, maybe a hint of apple. Reminded me of some light liquid malt extract I tried, nowhere near as intense, but not as attenuated as most beers (keep in mind, I'm not a barleywine drinker) Lots of viscous body, probably a SG of something like 1.030. The alcohol is covered very well, didn't notice it at all, could be from this bottles old age.

Mouthfeel: Quite Syrupy, very smooth, some carbonation, but not overpowering, I was expecting it to be a darker flatter beer along the lines of a strong ale or an imperial stout (I told you, I'm not a barleywine drinker) but still not unpleasent.

Drinkability: Well, I certainly could not drink a lot of this in a sitting, I was surprised my friend and I finished a bottle between us. This is not something I would see myself drinking throughout the night, too sweet for me, but strangely, I didnt feel the need to sip it as a strong ale or a whisky. I would personally share a bottle of this with 3-5 friends as half a bottle is a bit much.

a: caramel color, cloudy, thick foamy head settles to few fingers thickness, nice consistent lacing
s: sweet malts, banana, wheat, slight spiciness
t: sweet caramel malts, heavy wheat overtones win out over the normal barleywine hoppy bitterness, bananas make an appearance, balanced finish (more malty)
m: smooth body with almost-moderate carbonation
d: more like a weizenbock than a barleywine, an excellent beer either way; very well balanced make for a smooth beer

Appearance: Pours a cloudy apricot with a billowy French Vanilla colored head; lots of lacing and great retention

Smell: Bananas, whipped cream and vanilla, with caramel and alcohol underneath

Taste: Starts out like a fruit salad, with banana, pear, apricot and melon; by mid-palate, the fusel alcohol makes an appearance, bringing along a peppery oak character; after the swallow, the sweeter flavors re-emerge, thankfully, to mask the alcohol

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with gads of bubbly carbonation

Drinkability: Very tasty, although not my favorite wheat wine, as I would prefer a bit more caramel and hop flavors

Tried the 2006 again on 7/16/13 and, while the alcohol has mellowed, most of the flavor is still intact

A - Hazy rich copper pour, small head reduces to ring. Clingy but limited lacing.

S - Light wheat and lemon smell.

T - Wow. Apples, spices, wheat, small banana, more spices. All over the place. Slightly sour and bitter finish.

M - Rich and thick for a wheat, medium bodied great coating and carb.

D - Not my favorite style, but this one is very interesting.

Hazy carmel color -- bright hints -- thick off white head with rather large bubbles, decent retention. There is a bit of yeast still floating around in there.

Sweet - esters -- Huge malt not much in the way of hops. Some alchohol but not overpowering may have been more when the beer was young. Some apple maybe pineaple and a hint of banana

Deep malt and wheat blend together well. A lttle bit of heat left. Almost like a desert wine simillar to a botritoused sauvingnion blanc - wonderfully complex. some apple to the finish.

the sweetness cut by the carbonation, very smooth, I like it

So smooth, very drinkable for the abv
I rally like this beer, but it is not yet at it's peak I think it could go for another year easily.

Visible yeast caked in the neck of the bottle, similar to Girardin. Fluffy and fine meringue foam poofs up and above the rim of a Duvel tulip, seemingly defying gravity for at least a few minutes and lasting forever. Racing carbonation can be seen through the reddish-amber liquid. Very nice clarity, and a truly visually appealing ale.

Apple and ripe pear aroma, lightly sweet like pie filling, but not cloying.

Rich and very malty, still slightly boozy. lingering earthy bitterness, wheat and spices that remind me of coriander. Flashes of apple, pear, maple syrup, nutty almond or brazil nuts. Lightly carbonated, but not really noticeable, allowing the flavors to take center stage. It's pretty big, i'm wondering how I might finish this 750 now, but it will be an interesting experience trying. This is aging nicely, if you can get more, be sure to pick up an extra.

A- a dark, copper colored body with a finger sized lasting lacy head and tons of visible carbonation bubbles racing to the top of the glass

S- sweet fruits...apples, pineapples, melon. a bit of alcohol and some spices. hops are nowhere in sight.

T- very complex and spicy. lots of the above mentioned fruits. more than a hint of alcohol. a touch of pepper also.

M- extremely smooth with the right amount of carbonation

D- this one goes down too easily. very smooth and enjoyable. too bad its near impossible to get more of these. ill have to save my remaining bottles for special occasions. check this one out if its available to you.

From a 750 into the trusty oversized Red Oak glass...

Oooh, awesome, thick, almost coagulated dulce de leche-colored head with staying power. Caramel/butterscotch body has solid carbonation. This looks dangerous.

Exceedingly effervescent aroma of apples and pears with a moderate but pleasant alcohol burn and some slight sarsparilla scent. Hop notes are primarily floral in nature. Oakish wheat/malt texture provides a clean yet solid backbone.

Thick viscous sweetness stays on serve with tone of apples, pears and maybe Muscat grapes. Oiliness of floral hops pairs well with husky wheat and oak to cut the thickness a bit.

Coats the palate gently but with strength. Surprisingly clean for something this formidable. Has a bit of an apple cider feel to it but the wheat component provides good brightness.

This offering is put together very well. Slight disjoints here and there between elements do not detract from the enjoyment of this one - it's big. Sip and savor.

Bare Tree 06 pours a deep, hazy tangerine-amber, with a big fluffy-creamy lid of apricot tinted cream.

Really nice nose of bananas and melons, light vanilla cream, and yeasty wheat.

Full bodied with really, really soft creamy carb feel. Full creamy wheat flavors with nice melon and banana. Light black peppery spice in the finish.

This was my first wheatwine and I'm damn impressed. Not super complex, but a really tasty brew which I enjoyed immensely.

Poured an amber orange with good carbonation. A light yellow head with thick, but spotty, lacing.

The aroma was citrusy, bready and with mild hops. Overall though the aroma wasn't too strong though.

There was a slight spiciness in the taste at first that did fade as the beer warmed. A mellow malt taste with wheat and some banana as well.

This medium bodied beer was very well carbonated and very enjoyable. The alcohol was masked very well, although I'm not sure what the actual ABV is on this one. So the good masking of the alcohol is assuming that it is high in ABV.a

actually found this beer about a year ago, and hadn't been able to take it out, however i'm pretty psyched to get to drink it now.

A- poured a clear copper, amber color with a big off-tan light head. it fell after a short while, after having built up to an inch, and left pretty solid thick lacing all over the glass.

S- very wheaty, smooth malty. very intense, solid complexity.

T- first thing i notice is the sharp carbonation, which this isnt the mouthfeel, but it gives a strong acidity, but not the sour/lacto kind. very wheaty throughout. malt is strongly present underneath. there is a slightly sweet with a smooth finish, lightly hopped lingering character. i like that this follows the wheat wine 'catagory' as opposed to being the highly hopped barleywine with wheat style.

M- as above, really high carbonation, which i liked better as the carbonation died down a little. it let the more delicate characteristics shine through.

D- solid sipper, hard to drink quickly but very solid, and has aged wonderfully

I had this beer shortly after release, so I am reviewing from notes. And MAN, do I have a lot of notes to review.

This beer was a nice amber color, with a half finger head that produced nice lacing. It was mostly clear, but there were a lot of floaters in it.

Aroma was slightly sweet, with yeast, cloves, and bananas prominent and a light hoppiness overlaying the whole.

Taste was of strong malt, a big slug of wheat, bitter hops, alcohol, and a hint of bananas. I did not find it to be as sweet as several of the reviewers I have read, but perhaps it sweetened with age.

Mouthfeel was good, rich and full without being too syrupy.

Drinkability has to take a little hit, though, because this was a BIG beer and one bottle that size was more than I wanted at one sitting. Don't worry, I managed to drink it all... and still was able to walk to the sink to rinse the glass.

750mL 2006 vintage poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a golden honey colored clear amber with a one inch tightly packed pure white head that fades away into a thin ring with some decent stick bubble down lace, let's see if it sticks (har har) around a little longer. No it doesn't and the lacing that was there goes away, only a thin ring is left.

S: The short story is it smells like a barleywine with extra wheat thrown in, if you blindfolded me I would say barleywine all the way. On closer inspection pineapple, banana, and toasted caramel malt

T/MF: Buttery smooth with boozy heat highlighted edges and tingling hop bitterness, very active mouthfeel works to convey the complex flavors layered in this beer. Big hit of sweet wheat and malt to open then the black pepper and pineapple and melon being to dance at the party, can't really detect any vanilla and just a bit of oak but there is no lack of richness in this beer. Oh wait I found the vanilla, it is slight but it is there in the opening boozy heat. Very fluffy (as they say) mouthfeel for a beer with the detectable booziness I detect, the finish is long long long lasting and has a candi sugar kind of finish that counteracts the peppery spice from the initial sips.

D: I am only half way through my first glass and already I feel a bit strange and this beer has no lack of sweetness, thankfully the peppery spice keeps things from becoming too cloyingly sweet. Big heavy drinking, complex and not meant to be drank alone but to be enjoyed with friends. It's a shame I don't have any to share the rest of this with.
