16 fl oz. can, Lot #0741 printed on bottom. A new one to me from Two Brothers, the local beer store hasn't had these in stock very long, surprised to see that this beer was not added to the BeerAdvocate database, but apparently their 25th anniversary IPA is? Confusing. Apparently a collaboration with Two Brothers Artisan Spirits, it makes no mention as to what type of whiskey barrels this was aged in.
Poured to a Ballast Point tulip.
A - Very dark burnt sunset orange. Lots of tiny flecks of sediment in the glass. Finger of thin bubbly white head doesn't stick around long.
S - A musty barrel aroma; soft notes of caramel, toffee, leafiness. Bit of subtle must & oak wood are really the only signs of barrel aging here, not pulling any distinct vanilla, chocolate, or char.
T - Lots of caramel / toffee malts. No overt whiskey or booze character. Slight alcohol presence / warmth, but it is to be expected from the 11.0% abv. Slightly herbal / resinous hop character is still there. Sticky, lots of brown sugar & molasses on the finish.
M - Heavy and full-bodied, thick carb. Sticky & sugary finish. Easy-drinking stuff for the high abv.
Overall, not a whole lot of barrel character on this one, but a nice barleywine nonetheless.
Two Brothers 24th Anniversary Whiskey Barrel Barleywine -----4/5.
