Tried this beer on draught at my EastEnd local. It's one of the guest ales available at the Wetherspoon chains in the spring season. And apparently I was lucky to catch this beer while it was ju...st fresh.
Appearance: it comes with a (unexpectedly) thick (half-inch thick), pillowy, light-brownish beerhead, though it doesn't last for too long; the colour is dark brown to albany--very appealing for a strong mild like this.
Smell: hints of mild toffee (& even milder caramel), roasted/crystal maltiness and blackcurrent's tart and plum/date-like fruitiness comes through; not too strong note, which suggests relatively smooth body.
Taste and aftertaste: that's right!--light to medium-bodied, it somehow tastes extremely smooth, like what one would expect of a richer stout; toffeeish, roasted-maltiness on palate against refreshing-enough, fruity hoppy backbone. The aftertaste is dominated by lingering but mild hoppyness, while the overall mouthfeel is pretty round, with low degree of bitterness throughout.
Drinkability: I can't say if the balance is superb, because I haven't tried so many mild ales over here in southern England, thus ill-equipped to judge. But the body balanced with its strength (5%abv) is definitely remarkable and makes quite a few regular and much weaker milds available in this part of the country look pale. Quite nice to have two-halfs of those on early Sunday afternoon, after some nice Sunday roasts, I should think.

Sampled at the Luton Real Ale Festival.
This ale poured a very dark (practically opaque) brown/black with very little brown foam. The smell was dark malt and dried fruit with just a hint of sweetness. The taste was slightly sweet dark malt with some fruitiness, light caramel, light caramel, a hint of mollasses, and some hoppiness in the finish (Cascade hops, apparently). The mouthfeel was very smooth with medium body and low carbonation. It finished dry and the hoppy flavor lingered nicely. This was a fairly nice and easy to drink ale.
