Picked up at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam

From a bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours with a very little off-white head that disappears right away. No film at all except around the glass edges. Pretty black and cloudy and no carbonation to speak of.

SMELL: Roasted barley malt. Smoke and some dark fruit as well. The nose is strong and impressive. Certainly makes a statement.

TASTE: Taste complements the nose. Roasted barley malt and that smoky component as well. Sweetish but certainly not overwhelming. Nice aftertaste that trickles away slowly. Can slightly taste some oats as well, surprisingly enough. Taste is sharp and memorable.

PALATE: Medium-thick body. Goes down smooth and slightly sticky as well with minimal bite. Carbonation is there but well controlled.

OVERALL: Very nice brew that definitely makes a statement. Sweet but not overwhelming; very drinkable. Nose and taste are great. One that I'll re-visit for sure. Surprised there aren't more reviews of this one. Hoefully it'll soon start making its way around to beer glasses more often.

Poured from a cellar temperature 330ml bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pitch black body, with a small tan head.

Aroma: Roasted malts, milk chocolate, espresso coffee, burnt raisin, and blackcurrant.

Taste: The malts are toasty, with a slight milk chocolatey hint. There is a bitter hoppiness after, along side a dark coffee flavour. The aftertaste is a very bitter coffee, with tobacco and dark chocolate flavours.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy in body, with a oily texture, and a mildly warming alcohol feel.

Drinakability: The taste is very bitter for a stout but it adds something different to it. The flavours are interesting and well balanced. This is a good beer from a promising brewery that I would drink this again.

Served at cellar temperature from 330ml bottle into Brooklyn American pint glass.

L) Opaque reddish-black with a 1cm pale tan bubbly head.

S) Winey alcohol. Very slight hints of roasted malt.

T) Starts slightly sweet caramel malt, then roasted coffee and a bit of bitterness come in. Nicely balanced, with no stand-out flavours.

F) Nice heft to the mouthfeel, carbonation is right. Can't fault it.

O) Nice stout; get down to the brewery shop and you can buy a nice little flight starting off with the bitter, then the pale ale, then the porter, end with this and you will be happy.

Gravity halfpint at the Euston Tap.

A: Black body, dark brown highlights, and a solid, glass-coating tan head. Terrific.

S: Yep, that's an oyster stout. Chocolate, brine, and herbalness. Pretty good.

T: Follows the nose: sweet chocolate up front, briny bite behind, and clean bitterness on the finish. Very tasty.

M: Frothy medium body. Ok.

O: Good stout; the oyster component was pleasantly prominent without being overbearing. Definitely worth a shot if you run across it.
