Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a pale straw color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is sweet, apples, malts. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is kind of unusual, but not bad for the style.

Protochol Beverage "Light Shift"
12 fl. oz. can "BEST BY MAY/1/2025"

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is an interesting light beer, if it even is a beer. It's labeled as an "UNRIVALED LIGHT BEER" so I guess it is; this had to be approved by the TTB, right?. It's "low gluten" but all light beers are basically "low gluten", and most have so little gluten that they could almost be labeled as "gluten free". On the other hand it does have zero carbohydrates which is great, and it's just 80 calories. Let's get into the beer itself... it's very light in color ~ straw gold but on the lower end. The head is a bright white but it drops rather quickly. It's surprisingly not clear, and there's actually some particulate in there. It was initially swirling around but it's now settled to the bottom of the glass. There's even one little piece floating on top of what is now a partially foamless surface. The aroma is not good. It's like a combination of dimethyl sulfate and the mineralish character and acidity of a lactic fermentation. The malt doesn't really come through, and there are certainly no hops but we'll get back to that. On to the taste... my initial impression was apple, and then lactic acid. There is some malt to it but it's minor. On a positive note it's kind of like a hard cider. The smell is off-putting to me personally, but the taste is good. I'm pretty sure I have a few more 32 oz. bottles of some weird alcohol that I made years ago in my basement which is quite similar but fuller in flavor. It's not bitter at all, and there's a little bit of sweetness left behind in the finish but it dries quickly as there's enough acidity to balance it. The pH is 4.6 which is in range for a lager. I wouldn't call this a beer but we'll get back to that soon enough. In the mouth it's light-medium in body with a gentle caress from a minor carbonation. Now, back to the lack of hops and odd flavors, the ingredients are listed as: filtered water, alcohol, natural flavors, acetic acid, caramel color, and potassium sorbate. There are no hops listed so I question how it was allowed to be labeled as a "beer". The rest of the ingredients give us a good idea of how it's made: grain neutral spirits bought in bulk are diluted with water and then flavorings, acetic acid for balance, and caramel coloring for color are added to make it look and taste something like a beer. Where the particulate comes from is the most questionable part of that for me, and having said that I don't want to drink the rest of it as I don't have any idea of what that might be or where it's coming from. All in all I like this despite its flaws. It's not a beer, nor is it brewed, it's just mixed together but even forgetting about that it doesn't score well at all. I look at beers globally in terms of scoring, and there are some really nasty beers produced in third world countries that are far worse than this, but this is still not good.
