Appearance: Dark chestnut brown in colour with a small off-white head, good lacing. No visible carbonation.
Aroma: Nutty roasted malts, with a hint of coffee and chocolate. Noticeable hops, with slight burnt aromas.
Taste: Bitter hops on the palete at first. There are clear nutty flavours, roast chestnuts. The malts are toasty, and warming, providing chocolate flavours.
Mouthfeel: Quite heavy in body, with a clinging oily texture.
Drinkability: A good classic ale from a quality independent brewery. They have managed to provide an ale with brilliantly balanced flavours, and a moreish quality.

500 ml, bottle conditioned. Dark brown colour, no head, minimal carbonation. Delightful, intense and complex aroma with strong fruity and roasty notes - plums, prunes, coffee, chocolate, leather. Also hints of oak and spices. Nutty and roasty flavour with a pronounced bitterness from the roastiness and the hops. Hoppy bitter finish / aftertaste. Interesting beer, even historically: This is a traditional Strong Brown Ale, perhaps the oldest of all English beer styles.
