Growler from Pour Vous in Hendersonville, TN.
The latest in Blackstone's Blacklist series, this debuted on January 28 and is currently only available on tap. I was looking forward to trying this as Blackstone is easily my favorite brewery in Tennessee and the Quadrupel is one of my favorite styles.
Unfortunately I'm a bit disappointed. It's just not quite there. It has a fairly subdued aroma which gets slightly better as it warms or is swirled in the glass. It also falls short of the classic Quad look, a bit reddish and too clear in my opinion. None of the wonderful dirty brown water here unfortunately.
The flavor is equally somewhat lacking. It brings you right to the edge and then just stops. Don't get me wrong, it's very good, but you don't taste that sense of perfection you get from a Rochefort 10 or St Bernardus Abt 12. I didn't close my eyes and think "Damn, that's superb" after each sip. Of course, those are two of the best examples of the style in the world so it's probably not a fair comparison, but to me those are the benchmarks.
After saying all that however, it is still a beer Blackstone should be proud of as it is a very good example of the style and one I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again. No, it is not one of the best Quads in the world, but it is a damn good one.
